Peter Ben Lyon
31st March 1930 to 16th June 2007
Peter Ben Lyon passed away in Southampton General Hospital on 16th June after a long illness. Ben has been survived by his wife Helena, daughters Anne and Jane-Marie and his son, Paul.
Ben was a very keen, outstandingly fit and enthusiastic all round sportsman
whose ambition it was to become member of the Portsmouth Field Gun Crew.
During 1968 - 1973, he regularly attended all the closed season training sessions
and had no trouble in passing the selection process;
he had all the qualities needed to be a first class gunner.
Unfortunately, however, he was in a specialist position at Whale Island
and it was impossible to get him relieved to run!
This never deterred Ben, he continued to train regularly during the training season
in the hope that,
one day, his dream would be fulfilled.
It was due to this enthusiasm that he was made the
first Honorary Member of the original Field Gun Association when it was formed in 1968,
he repaid the faith we had in him by helping with the conversion of the old RM Band Practice Building into what was to become the Hole in the Wall Club.
Ben also used his
expertise as an OA to make several improvements to Field Gun equipment or,
if he was unable to do so, he would know someone who could!!
Ben remained an avid member of the Association throughout its up and downs and regularly attended the AGM's and functions until he was taken ill.
He was a lovely person who will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Although he never ran, his contribution to Portsmouth Field Gun was immense.
I am sending this sad news on to you in the hope that you will get it passed around the circuit. Even though I knew he had been ill it still came as a big shock!
He was with out a doubt one of the best and I am fully convinced that he would of got more personal satisfaction out of being a running member of a PFGC
than playing soccer for Scotland his other passion.
